Xanadu Sing-Along in Chicago

A ONE NIGHT ONLY CAMPTACULAR!!!

Are We A Muse?
Camp Midnight Movie SeriesDebuts with
Sing-Along Xanadu

Dick O'Day
and
Hell and a Handbag Productions
are teaming up with the legendary
Music Box Theatre
to present
SING-ALONG XANADU
The first in a late night film series of rancid
cinematic must sees we're calling
CAMP MIDNIGHT

A place, where nobody dared to go! Until NOW!

The Music Box teams up with Dick O'Day and Hell in a Handbag Productions to present a seasonal series focusing on the best (and worst) in camp movies – Camp Midnight. A Chicago first – Sing-Along Xanadu is the first film on the bill. For one night only, Saturday, December 1st, the classic musical roller disco film will be experienced the only way a classic musical roller disco film should be presented: in a theater filled with leg-warmers, drag queens and screaming Xanadu fans of all shapes and sizes belting out the film’s well known songs (“Magic,” “I’m Alive,” "Suddenly," “Xanadu,” etc.). Sing-Along Xanadu promises a tacky, hilarious extravaganza filled with roller skating, neon, spandex, and lots and lots of glitter – all with the lyrics emblazoned on the screen so shrill muses can sing loud enough for Zeus himself to hear.

Xanadu-ettes will also get to play games, interact with real life Muses that somehow got left on the cutting room floor, and vie for heavenly swag courtesy of Xanadu on Broadway – including a pair of free tickets to an upcoming performance. Tickets are $12 per person and may be ordered in advance at www.ticketweb.com. The fun begins at Midnight with hi-jinks throughout the movie.

Sing-a-long Xanadu is being hosted by the camptacular emcee Dick O'Day (Emmy award winning “Wild Chicago” correspondent) who is the rumored 3rd cousin, once removed, of Zeus, with entertainment coordinated by playwright and Artistic Director of Hell in a Handbag Productions, David Cerda who the Chicago Tribune has dubbed the “Charles Ludlam of the Midwest.” Rolling along side Cerda will be several comedic actors from Hell in a Handbag Productions, the company that the Chicago Reader says, “Represents the gold standard in camp in Chicago.”

The glitzy, over the top Xanadu, one of the worst, most beloved movies of all time (“mushy and limp” Roger Ebert declared in his 1980 review) stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent to earth to inspire a dissatisfied commercial artist (The Warriors Michael Beck) to follow his dream of opening a huge disco roller rink (in partnership with a clarinet playing Gene Kelly) – all while never removing her leg warmers. Like the meandering plot, Xanadu’s songs combine any number of musical genres – disco, rock, new wave, and big band – many of them by Electric Light Orchestra. The result is a spectacular, delightful mess along the lines of another spectacular mess, The Wiz.

Join Dick, your camptacular host for a one of a kind event when he joins forces with David Cerda and the Hell and a Handbag Players for a memorable screening of one of the WORST, most FABU-LUSH CINEMATIC PIECES OF MUSICAL GARBAGE you've ever tried to resist!

Olivia Newton-John Chritmas Wish Review

Summary: Generous helping of richly-crafted pop pleasures

Christmas Wish
From: Christmasreviews.com
I
don't know about you, but when I think "Olivia Newton-John," I visualize the bouncy "teenager" (she was actually 29 at the time) clad in a slinky, skin-tight black outfit and wrapped around John Travolta in "Grease" thirty years ago (yikes!). I had forgotten just how good her voice truly is, but you won't forget once you begin listening to Christmas Wish, a generous (61 minutes!) helping of richly-crafted pop pleasures for the holidays. This Aussie has a multi-dimensional voice that won't quit, and this album provides an excellent showcase.

Full, clear, aching, breathy, nuanced, and bursting with emotion, Newton-John's pipes are marvelous. She also hits the high notes with great clarity and not a hint of harshness. Her Christmas Wish is intensely interesting on several fronts. First, it employs the unusual technique of inserting very brief instrumental interludes of holiday chestnuts between almost every two vocal numbers. These interludes are the familiar ribbons that tie the whole musical package together, providing valuable musical continuity. Second, the artist includes quite a few Christmas originals, which blend seamlessly with the familiar. The overall mood is nostalgic, loving, and heartfelt. As a mom, I bonded immediately with her A Mother's Christmas Wish (written with Amy Sky), one of the prettiest pop holiday pieces I know. As Newton-John sings "I wish you love, a life to share, and when you find someone to care, I hope that time is kind to you, and that all your dreams come true--this is a mother's Christmas wish for you", I got all choked up from the beginning bars. For all the trials and tribulations, children are the greatest gift of all.

Christmas Wish has some lovely Celtic fluorishes (the use of a pennywhistle on O Come All Ye Faithful, for example), and features some very cool duets. On Every Time It Snows, another memorable Newton-John/Sky original, the artist trades lines and harmonies with Latin crooner Jon Secada (sometimes in Spanish), and the effect is very cool. Staying with the multilingual theme, Silent Night employs a lovely English/French/Spanish combo and includes guest vocalist Jann Arden. Michael McDonald provides excellent counterpoint vocals on the emotive All Through the Night, and Barry Manilow's shmaltzy A Gift of Love closes the album.

Olivia Newton-John is a timeless treasure, and her Christmas Wish will make you a believer. Lovely!

Olivia flies in

12:06p.m. 14 November 2007

Olivia Newton-John is flying into the Sunshine Coast today in preparation for tomorrow’s Steve Irwin Day celebrations at Australia Zoo.

Thousands of Crocodile Hunter admirers are expected to join the Irwin family, Newton-John and Jimmy Barnes for the special tribute day.

Activities at the zoo will also include the premiere of three new songs by nine-year-old Bindi Irwin, and the launch of Terri’s new book, My Steve, as well as a yet-to-be-revealed “special tribute” to her late husband.

November 15 has been set aside to remember Steve, who died on September 4, 2006, when a stingray barb pierced his heart as he was filming an underwater documentary off the north Queensland coast.

Terri said in a statement it would be a day guests would not forget.

“We can’t wait to celebrate Steve’s amazing life the way he would have wanted, through an action-packed day at the zoo,” she said.

The University of Queensland will honour Steve Irwin at a function tonight with a posthumous adjunct professorship in biology recognising his crocodile research.
